Gilding Repair on Perion Mirror ------ Repairing,Filling, Bole and Water Gilding -----

Here we are repairing a gilt mirror frame that has the usual kind of damage on a frame of this period
Splits cracks and bits missing.

Firstly the loose areas have to be cleaned away to get back to the wood below . This gives an a sound adhesion for the filler and any structural cracks can be glued up

Then we use white  Daz to fill  and model to the profile required . Daz is a water based filler and is a moulding clay that is easily sanded and carved .  Before applying the Daz  paint on a solution of diluted PVA, apply Daz when this is still wet   and we let it dry overnight.  Final shaping can then be done .

When the surface is good and pure we applied the base coats of bole crucial to the gilding process. Afew coats are put on and let to dry.

Then the gilding start . Usually we gild using loose leaf and  water gild  as is the case here
